Beauty Review: NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams.

I couldn't believe it when I checked, but it's been over a month since my last Beauty Review. They used to be such a pivotal section to my blog however recently I've been trying to be more creative with post ideas and unfortunately this one took a back seat. But when making a recent Boots order, I may have accidentally strayed into the NYX section (always a bad idea) and decided to treat myself to a couple of the Soft Matte Lip Creams. I honestly think I'm the last person in the world to try these and I was super excited to pick out a couple of colours and test them.

" Neither lipstick nor lip gloss this matte lip cream is a new kind of lip color that goes on silky smooth and sets to a matte finish. Soft Matte Lip Cream is surprisingly durable and unlike some matte lipstick formulas also moisturising. "

Because I was blind-buying online and couldn't see the colours IRL I decided to go for two totally different shades: Buenos Aires and Ibiza. Buenos Aires is a lovely baby pink, nude shade perfect for everyday wear, whilst Ibiza is a gorgeous, super bright fuchsia pink. Out of the two, I definitely prefer the latter, and we'll get onto why in a minute.

So from reading that I think it's fairly obvious that I got on a lot better with one of these shades than I did the other. Upon initially unboxing these I was super excited: as I hadn't seen the colours in person I reckoned I'd done a pretty good job of purchasing two wearable, yet different products.

I'm going to start by talking about the general positives and negatives before getting on to discussing each shade in a little more detail. Of course I think the first thing people tend to mention about NYX lip products, is the smell. Holy crap, these smell amazing! I'm not usually a huge fan of cake scented lip products (as they can smell a bit sickly sweet and unnatural) but these are incredible! It's like a combination of sugary frosting and cake batter if you don't know already or like me have somehow managed to stay away from the NYX counter since it dropped earlier in the year.

I loved how moisturising these feel to apply. Often with matte lipsticks, there's that drying feeling that causes your lips to scream for lip balm a few hours later, but I wore these all day at work and my lips were absolutely fine. However I do have a few problems with the formulaparticularly with the brighter shade, that I'm going to discuss below.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Buenos Aires

Okay, so looking at this product in it's tube I have to say I was very happy. It's a lovely baby pink with slightly orange undertones that I can imagine would look great with a tan. I immediately swatched it on the back of my hand and found out that it was quite sheer - which, is fine - sometimes you only want a hint of colour for everyday. However this was pretty much where the good points ended. After gently exfoliating my lips and adding a touch of lip balm (Pro tip: Don't. They're moisturising enough by themselves.) I started to apply the first layer of this onto my lips.

The formula was so thin and sheer that it ended up leaving streaky lines across my lips, which then proceeded to dry and soak into the fine lines on my lower lips. It also had a nasty habit of clinging to any dry patches that happened to have survived my exfoliation. I've got to say I was gutted. There was so much hype surrounding these that I'd expected seriously great things, however I was very disappointed. After adding a second coat, once the first had dried, the pigmentation picked up a little and I managed to achieve what's shown in the picture above. Whilst I like the end result I'm not overly impressed with this at all. I'm not sure if I just got a bad one, or if all of them are like this, but I definitely would not recommend this shade.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Ibiza

I'm sure you'll all be relieved to know that that's pretty much where the negatives end, because I LOVED Ibiza. Even just swatching it onto my skin, it was so much brighter, more pigmented, the formula felt more creamy, and I couldn't wait to get this onto my lips. And when I did, I was so happy. Ibiza is such a gorgeous shade for summer, it goes on without a streak or dry patch in sight, moisturises my lips and is such a steal at just £5.50. I think this shade could benefit from a matching lip liner (I didn't have one that matched unfortunately) as the doe foot applicator was hard to angle around my cupids bow but aside from that, I really can't fault it. Big thumbs up!

My advice to you would be to definitely head to the NYX counter at Boots and swatch them for yourself. I'm going shopping this weekend so I'm going to have a sneaky little gander and see if I can find anymore shades that I like!

Please do let me know your NYX recommendations because I think this is such an amazing drugstore brand that I'd love to try more of!

  2. I think they're good value for money but it's deffo best to swatch them! I bought one thinking it would look the same as the nudish colour on the lipstick but it came out like a fluorescent pink...oops!
